Maybe a woodworker can simply run it through a surface planer then sand it.How do you remove oil paint on wood that was painted with oil paint, i want to varnish the wood?
I'm going with Cacille's answer. However mike1942 makes a valid point. If the wood was not primed before it was painted, then the oils from the paint no doubt did soak into the wood, and probably not evenly. So there's a good chance that there will be dark spots or patches in the wood. You really won't know until you remove the old paint. Some sanding probably will be necessary ( for the final sanding use as fine a grit as possible), and then you may have to use a ';stain'; to try to hide as much of the inadvertent stains as possible. Then you can put on a protective coat of varnish if you want. There may always be some spots darker than others, but generally, even so, natural wood looks better than painted wood. Good luck. How do you remove oil paint on wood that was painted with oil paint, i want to varnish the wood?
Go to your local lowe's/HD and get a oil paint stripper. Put it on, wipe off the oil paint when it's ready, then do it again to remove any extra. Clean it off the best you can (sand it if you have to) and then varnish away.
Varnish or stain? Varnish is the final coat and may be pigmented. If you want to have a penetrating stain, you may not be able to do an even job with the oil stuff soaked into the wood.
Paint remover, paint scraper, and steel wool. Don't forget to use rubber gloves. If it's a door, the easiest way to remove the old finish and apply a new one is to lay it on top of some saw horses.
use a sander and sand the surface down, till the paint has gone and then simply varnish the wood. Hope this helps.
Try sand paper.., you'll need to sand the surface before varnish any way!
Either get some Mineral Spiritz, or just sand it with a belt sander.
